چکیده

Nine species of gastrointestinal helminths were found in southern black-backed gulls (Larus dominicanus Lichstenstein, 1823) from Otago Peninsula. Eight of these, Parorchis acanthus, Echinostoma revolutum and Echinoparyphium recurvatum (Trematoda), Dildotaenia latovarium and Hymenolepis alaskensis (Cestoda), Sciadiocara tarapunga (Nematoda), and Profilicollis antarcticus and P. novaezelandensis (Acanthocephala), are new records in this host species in New Zealand. A second nematode species present, Cosmocephalus tanakai, has been reported from L. dominicanus previously.

Eulimdana rauschorum n. sp. is described from southern black-backed gulls, Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein in Antarctica. The species is most similar to Eulimdana lari (Yamaguti, 1935) from Charadriiformes in the Holarctic. Males have spicules equal in length that are asymmetric in structure distally. There are 4-5 and 3-5 caudal papillae in rows to the right and left of the anus, and 2 small ge...

Increased Wounding of Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis) Calves by Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus) at Península Valdés, Argentina.

At least 626 southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) calves died at the Península Valdés calving ground, Argentina, between 2003 and 2014. Intense gull harassment may have contributed to these deaths. In the 1970s, Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus) began feeding on skin and blubber pecked from the backs of living right whales at Valdés. The frequency of gull attacks has increased dramatically o...
